DCS: Christen Eagle II on Pre-Order and Hawk News

To my great surprise Magnitude 3 has set up their Christen Eagle II for pre-order already. Personally, I'm not going to buy it. I'm more interested in fighter and attack planes. But there are a lot of aerobatic enthusiasts out there and if you're one, then by all means go pick it up. It looks like an interesting plane; just not one I'd be interested in. Quite honestly I didn't expect a new plane to be put on pre-order until Heatblur released their F-14. But Some surprises are pleasant. And this is one of them.

ED just noted in their update today that VEAO has rejected an offer by ED to take over the Hawk module leaving everyone with a plane they cannot use unless you keep an outdate version of DCS on your computer. You would have to have DCS 2.5.3 or earlier in order to run the Hawk. To be quite frank, the Hawk was never that good in the first place and certainly is not good enough to dedicate one full install of an obsolete version of DCS to run that one plane. Why VEAO refused to allow ED to take over updating the Hawk is beyond me. But it certainly does not look good for them or their sister company, Bluesky FS.

Now, ED did state that a full refund is available only for those who bought the Hawk on or after October 1st 2018. Of course that leaves that vast majority of players out (myself included) but at least they are making an effort.

Looking at the bright side (if it can be called that), at least VEAO only took money for 2 products and offered a refund early on for one. It would have been a lot worse if they had developed 4 or 5 modules and then suddenly dropped out of their agreement.

ED has stated that in order to ensure that no 3rd party can dissolve and leave their products unsupported again, a clause has been added to all 3rd party agreements stating that all files regarding the modules are to be handed over to ED for continued support. At least we know this situation will never come up again.

Well, that's all I have for you today. Take a look at the CE2 at the e-store. It's an interesting plane.

Happy flying everyone.

DCS Update: F/A-18C with AIM-120B's

Eagle Dynamics has just pushed through an update for the Open Beta version today and they have a little surprise for everyone. Something that they didn't include in their log. That's the addition of the AIM-120B's to the Hornet. We've known for a while that they are going to add the AIM-120C but that won't be for at least another week or so. To tide us over they have included the 120B. Now you can only equiq 4 120B's on the Hornet at the moment. From what we've seen from ED we will be able to include 10 AIM-120C's when everything is said and done. For now, 4 120B's and 2 AIM-7's will do.

The updates don't come without a cost, unfortunately. After this current update we are not able to fly the Mig-21bis or the SA342. Unfortunately Magnitude and Polychops did not submit the needed dll's on-time so it's going to be awhile before we will be able to fly them again. Hopefully ED won't push this update out to the stable version before those dll's are in.

As for the rest of the changes:

-P-51D Charnwood Campaign - added RU localization.

There's quite a lot but the download was quick for me. And that's coming from someone using PLDT's standard service so it shouldn't take too long for anyone else.

Until we can fly the Fishbed or Gazelle again...
have fun firing those 120B's off the Hornet.

SA342 TV sight is inoperative."

That's a lot! I've been downloading the update for the last 8 hours and I'm only 64% done. But, to be honest my internet is not the fastest in the world.

In anticipation for the Persian Gulf map we see they put a lot of Iranian skins for a number of their planes. This will work well with the F-14A since Heatblur has plans to release that with Iranian skins and possibly Iranian made weapons... but there's no real confirmation on that last one.

We also see that they have a China Asset Pack. This is the flyable J-11A for FC3 Deka was announcing and maybe even some Chinese weapons will be available too. I'll know once the download finishes and I can give it a try.
They did roll out the new video memory manager with this update. For those who don't know, DCS 2.5 was plagued by memory problems and stuttering. ED stated that this was not a memory leak and that they were working on the problem. With this update we get the first fix for the problem. The reason I say "first fix" is because as time goes by I'm certain ED will improve the memory manager making DCS smoother for us.

They also improved the Offline Mode for DCS. In the initial release of 2.5 you had 3 days of offline play before you couldn't use the modules you had bought. After those 3 days you'd need to start DCS while connected to the interent and log in to get another 3 days of offline play. In pure honesty this was a really bad idea and caused me some problems when my modem died and I had to wait for the phone company to supply me with a new one (they don't allow third party modems to be used with their interent). The new system is a selectable option for offline play. This is going to be of great help to me and I'm sure I'll be using Offline Mode quite often since I don't play in multiplayer.

Nothing is perfect and there are problems. This is especially true with Beta programs and updates. You can see under the "Known Issues" sections that there's some radio problems with the Ka-50 and Bf-109 as well as some graphics problems with the A-10A and the map. Don't worry about those problems they will be fixed. We just need to give ED time.

If you don't use the Open Beta version of DCS you'll just need to wait 1 or 2 weeks more and you'll get the whole update and there will likely be fewer bugs. After all, Open Beta is mainly for testing.

Enjoy the update and happy flying.
