DCS is currently running two (2) different versions. The current version that is the most stable and ready to use is version 1.5.7. This version comes with one map (Caucus map) and 2 introductory aircraft (the unarmed TF-51 with click-able cockpit and the armed Su-25T Russian ground attack aircraft with non-click-able cockpit) for free. The second version is in "Early Access" (usually called the Alpha version) and is referred to as version 2.1. Version 2.1 does not come with a free map or free aircraft. You will need to buy either the Nevada Test and Training Range map (NTTR) and/or the Normandy 1944 map. You will also need to buy one of the modules (DLC) aircraft in order to use 2.1.
Between these two versions I would suggest anyone new to the simulator pick up version 1.5.7 since it's stable, offers a free map with weather patterns you can control (snow, rain, fog, thunderstorm, wind, etc), and has 2 aircraft for you to try out. You can always buy the DLC aircraft to use if you like the game.
DCS will eventually become one version (2.5) which will offer the free Caucus map and aircraft and let you use the NTTR and Normandy maps along side it.
I'll go into more detail about DCS in each post.
