DCS: SURPRISE!!!!!

About four days ago I posted an update saying that said Eagle Dynamics was going to release the Yak-52 this month. And here it is! Out of pure honesty I expected the traditional pre-order period and then the actual release, however, ED has forgone the pre-order and went straight to release. It's a nice little plane and, so far, the only prop driven plane that is not a tail dragger that you are able to fly in DCS.

Personally, I'm not one for aerobatics and trainers. So, you can bet I won't be adding this to my arsenal, but if you like to role-play in your games and want to start off as a fresh Russian pilot then go ahead. Or if you simply like prop driven aerobatics then take a look at it. It's $39.99 which is significantly lower in price compared to the Hornet.

That was the first surprise. The next surprise? With the Hotfix update that was just released we can, once again, fly our beloved Mig-21's and SA342's. I expected those to be fixed in next weeks full feature update but they pushed it through along with getting DCS ready for the Yak. This is a very welcome surprise and I'll be jumping in my Mig-21 in just a few minutes. (I love that plane).

There are a few other things that were updated with this Hotfix so here's the list:

DCS World
* 4th client will not explodes when appears on carrier deck.
* ME. Added option to select which CAT a client or player spawns on.

DCS F/A-18C Hornet
* Corrected AIM-120 HUD symbol.
* Added Rmin, Rne, and Rmax indications on radar display.
* Missing AIM-120 loading options - fixed.
* Corrected AIM-120 loadout mass and drag.
* Wings will be folded in the spawn on the carrier parking hot.

Campaigns
* Spitfire Epsom Campaign. Update to all 12 missions that adds drop tanks and bombs to Spitfire flights where appropriate. It also adds a section on dive bombing tactics to the mission 2 and mission 12 briefing.
* Viggen Red Flag Campaign. Update to lineup cards for mission 2-10.

I'm curious as to what the "Missing AIM-120 loading options - fixed" is. I'll be checking that out shortly also. I hope they fix the second wire on the Stennis soon. I keep catching that wire and being flung off the carrier because that wire warps backwards.

Well, enjoy the updates and pick up that Yak for those who like learning by the numbers or just want to do some stunts.

Happy flying in the (not so) friendly skies.

DCS: Yak-52 to be Released in August

That's right. Eagle Dynamics has been hard at work making the Yak-52 trainer and they have confirmed that it will be released in August. Eagle Dynamics has been working hard on finishing the Hornet but as they've been working on the F/A-18 they've also been working on the Yak-52. I just didn't realize how far along it was.

I'm honestly very surprised at how far along the Yak-52 is in development. I've known for a while that they're working on it but I expected it to be released sometime after January. Especially since the Hornet is still in very early access and ED has just merged with Belsimtek. They have a lot going on right now and yet they're still able to get a new module out so quickly.

This does make it more difficult to determine when the F-14 will be released as ED has never released two modules at the same time (to my knowledge anyway). So, now it's looking more at September or October before anything happens with the Tomcat. If you like non-combat aircraft then it's a good thing. For me, personally, I've been looking forward to the F-14 since Heatblur originally announced a release date of December 2017. It's a bit frustrating that the Tomcat seems to be constantly pushed back all the time. But, hopefully It'll be released shortly after the Yak-52.

F/A-18C Carrier Operations Bug

As you know, the F/A-18C is very much Early Access and their are going to be bugs and problems with it at the start. I found one that I would like to let everyone know about before they start carrier operations.

Now, I have landed successfully on the Stennis a number of times (I've also crashed into the back of the carrier twice so... good and bad I guess) But I've had this bug show up twice on me so far. Take a look at this picture and you'll see what the problem is.

As you can see I hooked the third wire but it stretched out into oblivion backwards and I flew off the edge of the carrier (and promptly crashed into the ocean). I've hooked the forth and first wires with no problems but the third, for me at least, seems to cause this strange behavior. So If you hook the wire and fly off the edge, quickly pause the game and hit F2 and see. Maybe you landed just fine and the bug is causing you problems too.

Personally, I'm going to just land at runways for now and try again after the next update.

I just wanted to let you all know what I found.
Be safe landing until this get's fixed.

DCS: Basic Fighter Maneuvers Part 2

Hey everyone. I'm going to skip over the violin portion this time and do another DCS world post. It's been nearly a month since my last post and I'm sure everyone has gotten pretty good with the last maneuvers that I posted. I'm going to post the next two videos now: Barrel Roll and Looping.

These might seem just real simple and basic acrobatics but that's all BFM is. Still, just because it seems simple doesn't mean you'll get it perfect the first time. Just practice... especially if you're using the WW2 planes. The torque from the prop can make things more difficult.

So, here you go. Enjoy and get some practice.

DCS: Chuck's Guide

Now that you've picked your plane you've likely looked into the in-game tutorials. But are you really going to be able to remember everything when you start playing campaigns, online multiplayer, or making your own missions? Eventually you will but in the mean time you'll want a quick guide.

You could do what I originally did and write down every little thing in a notebook and try to follow that... but it gets difficult when you start using aircraft with lots of switches or with Multi-Functional Displays. So the best thing to use is Chuck's Guide to the various DCS planes.

His guides were extremely helpful to me when I start flying new planes or go back to one that I haven't flown in a while. Some of the guides are a bit old and might not hold fully to current iteration of the plane but the startup, radar, and weapons implementation are usually still faithful.

There are only 2 guides that I am aware of that have some small problem here or there. Those are the Viggen and the Mig-21bis guides. It's natural for the Viggen guide to be off simply because the plane is still in early access and things are going to change. I'm certain once the Viggen is complete Chuck will create a new guide that will reflect the completed state of the aircraft. The Mig-21bis guide is only off on one aspect: Landing. This is due to Eagle Dynamics changing how DCS World itself works while working up to version 2.5. I'm unsure why Magnitude has not kept up with the changes and updated the Mig-21 but they seem to be focusing entirely on either making a new module which they have not announced yet or they are still dealing with some internal strife left over from their split with Heatblur.

The landing part of the Mig-21 guide that is currently incorrect is easily corrected. On page 41 the guide states to be at 0-5 degrees angle of attack at touchdown. This is currently incorrect. Magnitude had posted a landing video, which I linked to in a previous post, where they say you need to be at 10 degrees angle of attack, as shown by the UUA dial, upon touchdown. That's the only problem for that guide. Everything else is still accurate and you're good to go.

Here's the video again:

I hope this has been useful to all of you. I know this is kind of a short post. Next time I'll be posting the video's that have helped me remember Basic Flight Maneuvers. This will be helpful in combat no matter what plane you chose... except maybe the helicopters. See you next time.

DCS World Modules

This week I'll be telling you about the different modules available in DCS World.

Modules are any add-on content (commonly refereed to as DLC's or DownLoadable Content) that are made officially by Eagle Dynamics or their 3rd party affiliates. Currently there are eight (8) 3rd parties creating modules along side Eagle Dynamics. I'll list them below with the modules they have created and what is currently announced. Any modules that have Early Access next to them means that they are released but are still in development so expect a lot of changes to them until they reach release status.

Eagle Dynamics (ED):

VEAO Simulations
RAZBAM:
Belsimtek:
AvioDev:
Polychop Simulations:
  • Released:
  • In Development:
    • JU-87D-5/G-2 (on hold while they look for a coder who understands German)
Magnitude 3 LLC:
MilTech-5:
  • Released:
    • (nothing yet)
  • In Development:
    • BO-105 PAH1A1
Deka Ironwork Simulation:
  • Released:
    • J-11A (FC3 update)
  • In Development:
    • JF-17

That's a pretty long list but you can see they are hard at work making this game a fun environment with different planes to fly (provided you're willing to spend the money on the modules and the time to learn them). I'll end this post by listing the modules that I personally have and next time I talk about DCS I'll go into which plane is easiest to fly and which has the steepest learning curve. 😉 Until then, happy flying.
